Connecting Google Calendar to Existence

Syncing past and future calendar events

Written by Clayton Porter

Connecting your Google Calendar(s) is how you account for your time today, in the future as well as the time you already created, before you ever opened Existence. This is because once connected, your past and future events will show up on your Blocks Page as Time Blocks.

Currently Existence only connects to your primary Google calendar, any secondary calendars connected to your Google account that create events on your primary calendar will not appear in Existence.

How to connect

Click the profile icon in the top right corner and select Calendars under Settings. This is where you can add, view, or manage calendars linked to your account.

Click Add Google Calendar.

You'll be asked to choose an access level, covered below.

Select the Google account you want to connect. If it's not listed, you can add a new account and sign in from here. Follow the on-screen prompts to grant permission, this step is required for the integration to work.

Once done, refresh Existence to see past Google Calendar Events as Time Blocks. It is strongly recommended that you connect multiple Google Calendars to your account if your time is reflected across more then just one.

Note: At the start of your time with Existence you may need to manually assign pillars and activity tags to past events. As Existence starts to pick up on patterns within how your time is spent, it will automatically assign pillars and activity tags. You can always edit and adjust if needed.

Choosing your calendar access level

Full Access means Existence can read and write to your Google Calendar. Any Time Block you create or edit in Existence syncs back and appears on Google Calendar too.

View Only means Existence can read your events but cannot make changes or add new ones on your Google Calendar.

Managing Your Calendar Connections

If you want to update your calendar's permissions, adjust your primary calendar, reconnect or remove a calendar completely revisit the Calendars page under your profile icon and Settings.

To the right of each calendar you will see three white dots, click on those for a submenu of options.

Note: If you are trying to connect a work Google Calendar and the connection is showing an error or failing, it may need to be a connection approved by your IT department.

Reach out to your IT for approval, and if any further information is needed by your IT contact [email protected] for assistance.

Additionally, Google Calendar is the only calendar system Existence connects with. Connecting with additional systems is on the product roadmap.
